Eight nights, not eight big gifts
Gelt is the old custom. Historians note that exchanging gifts on Hanukkah is much newer, and many families keep most nights small. A simple plan: a few small gifts, one or two practical ones, and one gift that lasts.
- Small nights: things under $25
- Practical nights: cashmere-lined leather gloves for December weather
- One that lasts: a Star of David pendant or bracelet
Shabbat and the first night
This year the first night falls on a Friday, when the Hanukkah candles are lit before Shabbat begins. Some families save gifts for a later night, which also gives a slow parcel a few extra days.
