Low, medium, high or shag: the right pile depends on the room. Step on it.
Pile
Tap or move over the rug to step on it
Pile is how tall the fibres stand. The higher it is, the softer it feels, and the more it holds on to dirt and dents under furniture.
Hide and shearling
Cowhide is flat and sheds little: good for busy rooms. Sheepskin and shearling are a natural shag: best where you walk barefoot.
General guidance. Each rug's page gives its pile height and care.
In short
Low pile, under about a quarter inch, suits hallways, dining rooms and entries: chairs slide and it's easy to vacuum. Medium pile, a quarter to half an inch, suits living rooms. High pile, over half an inch, suits bedrooms and quiet corners. Shag, sheepskin and shearling suit places where you walk barefoot; shake and brush them rather than using a beater bar. Cowhide is flat and good for busy rooms.
