Make the room look expensive: what size rug?

The most common rug regret is going too small. Rules of thumb used by designers, and the hide, shearling and sheepskin rugs on Kremage.

  • Living room: at least the front legs of every sofa and chair sit on the rug. The rug should be wider than the sofa.
  • Dining room: the rug extends about 24 inches (60 cm) past the table on every side, so chairs stay on it when pulled out.
  • Bedroom: about 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) showing on each side of the bed, or a smaller hide at the foot or the side you step out of.
  • Hides are organic shapes. Measure their longest and widest points against the space, and expect each one to differ a little.
  • Bedroom, by bed size: for a queen, 8 × 10 ft is a common pick; for a king, 9 × 12 ft. Two runners, one per side, also work.
  • Entry or hallway: a runner, with a few inches of bare floor showing on each side.
  • Before you order: tape the outline on the floor and live with it for a day.

Sheepskin or cowhide?

  • Where: sheepskin suits a chair, a bedside or a reading corner; cowhide covers a living or dining area.
  • Feel: sheepskin is plush and woolly; cowhide is short hair on a flat hide, smooth with a little texture.
  • Care: Homelosophy’s sheepskin care is to shake, air out and brush, spot clean with a damp cloth, and use a fur-specialist dry cleaner if needed.
  • Lead time: many cowhide rugs are made to order; the Parquet listing gives 5–8 weeks of production. Order well before the date you need it.

Real hide, honestly

The hide rugs here are real cowhide and sheepskin, as their maker describes them. Two things are true at once: hides mostly come from cattle raised for meat and dairy, and a hide that’s used isn’t discarded (the sellers’ argument); but hides also earn money for that industry (the counterpoint). If you avoid animal products, a hide rug isn’t for you. Words like “ethically sourced” on a listing are the brand’s.
