Necklace layering lengths and bracelet stacks

Layering works when each chain sits at a different height. The usual lengths, and where they fall:

  • 14–16 in: at the base of the neck (choker to collarbone)
  • 18 in: just below the collarbone, the most common length
  • 20 in: a few inches below the collarbone
  • 22–24 in: at or above the neckline of most tops

Space each layer about 2 inches apart and mix one plain chain with one pendant. For bracelet stacks, combine one rigid piece (a bangle or tennis bracelet) with softer chains or beads, in the same metal tone.

Keeping them from tangling

  • Fasten the shortest necklace first, then the longer ones.
  • Mixing clasp types (lobster, spring ring, ball chain) helps them stay apart.
  • Vary the weight: fine, medium, chunky, with one pendant as the focal point.
  • Store each necklace separately, hung or in its own pouch.

A stack to start from

A 16-inch base chain, an 18-inch textured chain, a pendant at 16–20 inches, and a 20–24 inch long layer. Lengths sit differently on different necks, so treat these as starting points (Grace Studio).
