Winter guide

Warm gloves that aren’t bulky and work with your phone

Leather gloves from Leather Gloves Online (many of them Italian) sorted by the questions people actually ask: which lining is warmest, which work with a phone, and what size to order.

Which lining is warmest?

Unlined leather is the slimmest and the least warm. Silk lining adds a little warmth with almost no bulk. Cashmere and lambswool are warm and still slim. Rabbit fur is, in the brand’s words, “one of the warmest, softest” linings. Fleece lining on goatskin and sheepskin is a warm, more casual option.

Roughly, warmest to lightest: rabbit fur, wool or lambswool, cashmere, silk, unlined. That’s general guidance from glove makers, not a lab test; warmth also depends on thickness, fit and how long you’re outside. Rabbit fur is a fur lining, so if you avoid fur, wool or cashmere are the warm alternatives.

Gloves that work with your phone

Touchscreen gloves have conductive fingertips, so you can answer, scroll and take a photo without taking them off. How well they work varies by phone and by how dry your fingers are.

Driving gloves

Thin, unlined or perforated gloves with open backs or knuckle holes, made for grip on the wheel rather than warmth.

What size? 7 or 7½?

Measure around your dominant hand at the widest point, just below the knuckles, leaving out the thumb. Traditional glove sizes are that measurement in inches. Leather Gloves Online sizes women’s gloves from 6 (XS) to 9 (XXL) in half sizes, and men’s from 7 (XS) to 13½–14 (XXXXL). Each product page lists its own sizes. Several say “these gloves run true to size”. Between sizes, the slimmer linings forgive less than fur.

  • Use a soft tape measure, or a strip of paper and a ruler.
  • Wrap it around the palm at its widest point, just below the knuckles, leaving out the thumb.
  • Measure your dominant hand; it’s often slightly larger.
  • The number in inches is roughly the glove size. Between sizes, size up for lined gloves, since the lining takes up room.

Method from glove makers’ guides (Dents). Each product page lists that glove’s own sizes.

Sizes are from the brand’s product listings. Lining descriptions summarise the brand’s product pages.
